Increase in Ethanol Blends

Increase in Ethanol blends:
Issue: A large group of ethanol manufacturers submitted an application for a waiver under the Clean Air Act for ethanol gasoline blends up to 15 percent (E15) meaning the blends could begin to be sold without comprehensive science-based testing. Numerous problems have been caused to boat engines that have used ethanol blends.  Mid-grade ethanol fuel can corrode boat fuel tanks, reduce fuel efficiency, and increase smog-forming pollution and other emissions. Corrosion creates particulate matter that can clog fuel filters, fuel systems, and damage engine components. Mid-grade ethanol also causes galvanic corrosion in aluminum tanks since the presence of ethanol and water will conduct electricity.

Action:
AMI has signed on with many other organizations to ask that this waiver be denied unless or until independent testing on marine engines and other products demonstrates they are safe for consumers and do not harm the environment. Under the Energy Independence and Security Act 2007, EPA is mandated to fully study the effects of any ethanol blend over E10.
